A PEACE CORPS EXPERIENCE
By Judy Johnson

In 2001, Judy Johnson was finally able to fulfill a longtime dream and serve this country in the Peace Corp. President John F Kennedy established the Peace Corp in 1961, describing it as “the toughest job you’ll ever love.” For Judy it would be forty years before she was able to join.

Johnson was a college student at the University of Illinois in 1961. While there she co-edited The Daily Illini with Roger Ebert. After graduating, she taught high school English until her first child was born. After a long time off to raise her family, Johnson went back to work in the publishing industry, eventually relocating with her teenage children to Southern California.

As the new century began, it was finally time for Judy Johnson to answer the call given by President Kennedy so many years before. She joined the Peace Corp and travelled to Yalta, in the Crimea, on a business project to introduce capitalism to the former communist living in Russia and Ukraine. Her experiences from that time are what she’ll share with members of The Connection.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE from KAREN McCALLISTER

2019 started off with a very interesting and thought provoking program thanks to our new Program Director, Jan Macdougall. Jan will be assisted by Connie Sue Badgett.

I also want to give a big thank you to our previous Program Director, Lou Aidukas. Lou has been actively helping The Connection to grow by facilitating craft groups and becoming our Vice President, which will be a great addition to our club.

We all should thank Fran Reichhold for manning the hospitality table. Fran is taking a well deserved retirement from the board and Ann Riddle has stepped up to take her place. If anyone could spare a few minutes prior to the meeting, I think she would appreciate help. You also have a chance to meet The Connection members as they stop by to pick up refreshments. Ann is assisted by Bea Bergerman.

Georgia Clima has taken the Directorship of Special Events. Her first event will be our 30th Anniversary Pot Luck in March. She is looking for volunteers and is assisted by Susan Grancio.

Watch your Newsletter and check the website, www.rossmoorconnection.org, to keep up with all that is happening.
