THE WHITE PONY EXPRESS

A talk to be presented by Mandy Lewis Nakaya.

Dr Carol Weyland founded the White Pony Express (WPE) in September of 2013. She saw that right here, in Contra Costa County, thousands of people were going hungry and even more had unhealthy diets as a result of poverty. Dr Weyland also realized that food retailers threw away copious amounts of high-quality food daily. She created a food rescue plan where good surplus food could be picked up from these retailers and delivered to organizations that serve those in need. The program has rescued more than 8,000,000 pounds of nutritious food that would have gone to waste.

The White Pony Express also operates a mobile boutique. It is a general store which brings to underserved parts of the county surplus new and like-new goods such as clothing, books, toys and games.

Mandy Lewis Nakaya has a bachelor’s degree in psychology from John F. Kennedy University. She has worked and volunteered for local non-profit organizations throughout the San Francisco Bay Area for over thirty years. She is deeply committed to making her community a better place to live.

WANT TO JOIN OUR BOARD?

Are you ready for a good time and make more friends? Then you may be interested in serving on the Board of The Connection.

Five years ago, I moved across the country to Rossmoor, not knowing anyone. After I became acclimated to my new surroundings, I began exploring things to do. The best thing that I did was join The Connection. I joined in January and in February I was asked to help with the potluck in March. I gladly accepted and one thing led to another and soon I was Vice-President. After 1½ years, I became President. December will be my last month as President and I will be followed by Lou Aidukas. This has been much more worthwhile experience than work. When you have a great Board the work is spread out and shared by all. Our monthly Board meeting always bring out a laugh or two, and great camaraderie. Some of us finish the night by going out to dinner.

Contact Lou at 925-433-5153 or lou.aidukas@yahoo.com if you think sharing ideas and having a good time doing it is for you.

NEW FRIDAY BOOK GROUP

A new book group has been formed! A planning meeting was held at the home of Fran Barry where it was decided the group would meet the 2nd Friday each month from 1pm to 3pm. The meetings will be held at members’ homes, and the hostess for the month suggests a book and leads the discussion. The group is looking for a few more members. If you love books and would like to join, please email Fran Barry at franbarry23@icloud.com. The first meeting will be Friday, October 11 and the book is Beneath A Scarlet Sky, by Mark Sullivan.

SMALL GROUP UPDATE

Board Games

Board games are being played by several members in MPR #1 every second Thursday of the month from 6-9pm. The ladies are currently playing Rummikub and Mexican train dominoes. The room can accommodate diverse games and players. Conversation, laughter and companionship accompany this Board Games group. Bring your game and Connection friends to MPR #1. Contact Connie Sue Badgett at 559-641-8200.

Movie Fans

The movies group is without a leader. The idea for this group is to get together for Rossmoor movies or movies in the area and then discuss them. The group could have lunch or dinner or cocktails before and/or afterwards. The previous leader will share her experience. If you're a movie person and could "lead" the group, contact Vicki Stanley at vscottage@comcast.net.

Sunday Social

Three new Sunday Social groups formed prior to the summer hiatus. This is a group of 6-8 ladies who meet one Sunday a month for conversation, wine and cheese. It takes approximately 6 months for the group to "jell" as you get to know one another. The rewards of this intimate group are many. Please contact Vicki Stanley at vscottage@comcast.net if you’re interested in a Sunday Social and can make a commitment of at least six months.

Ballet Fans

Are you interested in either local or SF Ballet this season? Looking for a companion to attend with you? Contact Vicki Stanley, Activities Facilitator, at vscottage@comcast.net to be put in touch with other fans.

Book Groups

Last season, four book groups were formed. The Friday group is welcoming new members. For more information contact Fay McDonald at faymc@aol.com or Fran Barry at franbarry23@icloud.com.
