THE CALIFORNIA NATURAL RESERVE SYSTEM

A talk to be presented by Kathleen Wong.

The Natural Reserve System came about because of the loss of California ecosystems to development beginning in the late 1940s. UC scientists have established a library of ecosystems dedicated to research, teaching and public service. The System now includes examples of most major state habitats. Tens of thousands of researchers, students and school children visit reserves from costal tidepools to inland deserts, oak woodland to lush wetlands and alpine meadows to redwood forests. The UC Natural Reserve System cultivates tomorrow’s field scientists, provides environmental forecasting and serves the people of California.

Kathleen Wong is the director of communications for the UC Natural Reserve System. She is a science writer who specializes in natural history and the environment of California. She is the former editor of California Wild, the magazine of the California Academy of Sciences and Coauthored Natural History of San Francisco Bay in 2011.

IN MEMORY OF A FOUNDING MEMBER

Joan Marx, 91, a long–time resident of Rossmoor, died peacefully at home in Walnut Creek, CA, on June 2, 2019. Joan Eve Sandler grew up in New York City. In 1947 she married Wilbert Markovits, who passed away in 1954. In 1955 she met and married Jean-Paul Marx, to whom she was married until he passed away in 2007. She recently said that marrying Jean-Paul was the best thing that she ever did! Joan moved with Jean-Paul from New York to Rossmoor in 1988 to escape the winter weather and to be closer to her young grandchildren.

When she first moved here she was one of the younger residents living in Rossmoor. She felt that she was not making a “connection” with anyone she met and wanted to meet more active individuals. Although she was an avid golfer, that was not enough. She wanted to meet other ladies who would like to walk, bicycle and attend movies. Together with Nancy Nordstrum, from the Rossmoor Department of Community Affairs, and fellow resident Phyllis Wilson, she formed THE CONNECTION to provide a vibrant social community for women at Rossmoor. THE CONNECTION, with more than 200 current members, continues to this day.

A memorial celebration will take place in late summer and if you want further information, please contact the family via email (paulinemarx@outlook. com). In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The Connection (http://www. rossmoorconnection.org) J

For more information about the founding of THE CONNECTION, see the interview with Joan on the “ABOUT US’” page of this website.

PRESIDENT’S REMARKS FROM KAREN McCALLISTER

The General Meetings and Newsletter will be taking a summer vacation. The next Meeting and Newsletter will be in September. All group activities will continue all summer. Please check the website, www.rossmoorconnection.org, to find out what is happening. Watch your email for notices that may be sent over the summer. The first half of the year has sped by. We have added several new groups and many new members. Now is the time to start thinking about what you can do to become more active. We will be needing new officers and directors. Lou Aidukas is Chair of the Nomination Committee. If you would like to serve on the Committee or have questions about the positions that need filling, please call her. It is fun and a great way to get to know members. Instead of our Meeting in June we will be holding our Annual Picnic. I hope you have your reservations in, because it should be a good time for all. Good food and good friends! After the picnic watch Rossmoor Bingo at 5:00pm as The Connection will be calling numbers.

CALLING ALL MOVIE FANS!

The Connection Movies Group has been without a leader. We’ve had one person express interest in the position, but she was unable to take charge. The idea for this group is to meet together for Rossmoor movies or movies in the area and then discuss them. The group could have lunch or dinner or cocktails beforehand and/or afterwards! The previous leader will share her experience. If you’re a movie person, and could “lead” the group, contact Vicki Stanley at vscottage@comcast.net.
