A PEACE CORPS EXPERIENCE
By Judy Johnson

In 2001, Judy Johnson was finally able to fulfill a longtime dream and serve this country in the Peace Corp. President John F Kennedy established the Peace Corp in 1961, describing it as “the toughest job you’ll ever love.” For Judy it would be forty years before she was able to join.

Johnson was a college student at the University of Illinois in 1961. While there she co-edited The Daily Illini with Roger Ebert. After graduating, she taught high school English until her first child was born. After a long time off to raise her family, Johnson went back to work in the publishing industry, eventually relocating with her teenage children to Southern California.

As the new century began, it was finally time for Judy Johnson to answer the call given by President Kennedy so many years before. She joined the Peace Corp and travelled to Yalta, in the Crimea, on a business project to introduce capitalism to the former communist living in Russia and Ukraine. Her experiences from that time are what she’ll share with members of The Connection.

Vice-President's Message from Lou Aidukas

I hope that all of you had an enjoyable holiday season which started with our own Hawaiian Holiday party where we sang, danced, and laughed. On behalf of myself and the Board, we are looking forward to a new year of exciting programs and fun special events. One of our special events will be the celebration of The Connection 30th anniversary.

Our membership continues to grow. We welcome both our new members and our long-time members to join in our small groups in 2019. The small groups are a great way to make new friends and reconnect with those you already know. As one of your New Year’s resolutions, say hello to someone you don’t know at our hospitality time before our monthly meetings, attend and introduce yourself at our monthly Cocktails at Creekside, or volunteer to help at one of our events. Enjoy the friendship of The Connection. We wish you a happy, healthy new year.

Watch your Newsletter and check the website, www.rossmoorconnection.org, to keep up with all that is happening.

Outreach Gifts to Charity

Thanks to the generosity of all of you, we presented gifts of $200 to the Rossmoor Fund and $1,000 to Meals

on Wheels for the benefit of our needy neighbors here in Rossmoor.

Starting at the January General Meeting once again I will be selling 50/50 tickets. One half of the proceeds of that

night’s sales will go to a lucky participant whose name is drawn and the balance will go in our charity fund. 50/50 tickets will be on sale at every General Meeting so don’t forget to bring money so you can participate. The tickets are selling for $1 each.
